The Missing Piece in Birth Prep: How to Prepare for Breastfeeding in 7 Steps

  • Renee Chan

Most of us only really start thinking about breastfeeding when we’re expecting. We picture that classic, serene imagery: a mother holding a peaceful baby, nursing away in a comfortable armchair, maybe with a breast pump sitting nearby.

And right there, our visualization stops. Full stop.

For generations before us, breastfeeding was simply the norm—babies couldn’t survive without it. Women grew up seeing it, knowing it, and absorbing a trick or two long before they ever had their own children.

Today? It’s completely different. Exposure is low. Most of us don’t see the day-to-day realities of breastfeeding until we are in the thick of it. Usually, the reality hits right after giving birth. You look at your beautiful baby’s face, and suddenly it dawns on you: Gosh, what do I do now?!

When the "Mini-Tornadoes" Hit

When the execution doesn't match the expectation, waves of questions hit like a tornado. It’s incredibly easy to feel torn apart, wondering, "What is wrong with me?"

Guilt creeps in. You have the idea of breastfeeding, but absolutely no idea how to execute it.

Here is the truth: It is not your fault. You aren't failing; you are simply underexposed to the process.

As women, we have the biological tools to breastfeed, but we aren't handed the user manual. Unless there is an underlying medical condition, most of us can breastfeed. We just need preparation, knowledge, practice, and a dash of perseverance.

So, how do you set yourself up to breastfeed with ease? Here is how to truly prepare.

1. Get to Know the "Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"

Start by talking to friends or family members who have breastfed or are currently nursing. Listen to their stories. Get to know the beautiful moments, but don't shy away from the challenges either!

Once you hear the real stories, it’s time to go deeper. The human body is amazing—the fact that breast milk can dynamically grow a baby is nothing short of miraculous. Breastfeeding relies on a complex, beautifully coordinated chain reaction in your body, almost like an orchestra. Knowing how this mechanism works allows you to optimize your milk supply and, more importantly, your comfort.

2. Take a Prenatal Breastfeeding Class

Does a class really make a difference? Yes. Studies consistently show that parents who attend a breastfeeding class before birth have significantly higher breastfeeding success rates and longer durations.

When choosing a class, look for one that explains the physiology, anatomy, and hormones. Understanding the "why" behind the "how" is what helps you optimize your latch and milk supply.

You'll want to get well-acquainted with your body's internal support system:

  • Prolactin: The milk-making hormone.

  • Oxytocin: The milk-release (let-down) hormone.

  • FIL (Feedback Inhibitor of Lactation): A highly underestimated substance in breast milk that tells your body when to slow down production.

Want to master the inner workings of your body? In our self-paced online course, The Breastfeeding Confidence Blueprint, we break down the biology of breastfeeding so you can learn how to optimize your milk supply from day one.

3. Learn the Troubleshooting Steps Before the Crisis

It isn't enough to just know how breastfeeding works; you also need to know what to do when things go off-script. The breastfeeding journey has its ups and downs. Sore nipples, mastitis, and clogged ducts can happen quickly and escalate fast.

Instead of frantically googling for answers at 3:00 AM while in pain, learn the remedies beforehand. Because "baby brain" is very real and we all get forgetful, our online class includes downloadable roadmap guides with step-by-step remedial steps. It’s the ultimate lifesaver for moms in the nick of time.

4. Time It Right (The Sweet Spot)

The ideal time to join a breastfeeding class is between 24 to 32 weeks of pregnancy (late second trimester to early third trimester). At this stage, the information is fresh enough that you won't forget it, but you aren't yet too physically uncomfortable to sit through a lesson.

If you attend a physical class, take great notes. It is incredibly common for moms to fumble after birth because they forgot the techniques.

Alternatively, consider a relaxing, self-paced online class. The Breastfeeding Confidence Blueprint gives moms 1 full year of access. You can re-watch mini-videos right from your phone while practicing a latch, or reference our digital cue cards during a midnight crisis.

5. Put "Muscle Memory" to Work

Practice makes perfect. Once you have the knowledge, start practicing the physical movements before baby arrives:

  • Try out different breastfeeding positions.

  • Learn how to hold a baby (or a doll/pillow) while aiming for a latch.

  • Practice hand-expression techniques.

You can listen to our course videos or dive into our Premium Audio Vaults (featuring Q&As to the most common breastfeeding queries) while you commute or fold laundry.

6. Master Your Tools & Storage

Whether you are a corporate mom, a work-from-home mom, or a stay-at-home mom, pumping might be part of your plan. There are dozens of pumps on the market. It is highly beneficial to choose and understand your pump before the baby is born. If your baby is struggling to transfer milk efficiently at the start, having a pump (or knowing how to hand-express) ensures your supply stays safe.

Once that liquid gold is expressed, you need to store it safely. Bacteria loves nutritious breast milk!

  • Room Temperature: Up to 4 hours.

  • Refrigerator: Up to 3 days (keep it deep in the fridge, never on the door).

  • Freezer: For anything you won't use within 3 days.

We cover the breakdown of different breast pumps and include handy, downloadable milk storage cue cards inside The Breastfeeding Confidence Blueprint.

7. Build Your Postpartum Village Early

Before your baby is born, locate a local Lactation Consultant and save their contact information in your phone. This simple step will save you a pool of tears and hours of time if you face pain or latch issues. Sore nipples can be a real ouch, and you deserve professional support right away.
